Essence

A 330-hectare
wildlife refuge
reimagined as a
temporary village.

Nido Farms is not the beginning of a story. It is the next chapter of a forty-year story set inside the Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Hacienda Barú — passed from Jack Ewing's forty years of stewardship into the next generation's care. Hospitality is not the product; it is the container that makes meaningful experiences possible.

Promise

Childhood as the experience. Parents restored. Nature as teacher.

Audience

High-net-worth families seeking developmental nature experiences for their children.

Position

The only family-positioned luxury ecolodge in the Dominical–Uvita corridor. The physical home of the Explorer life-stage — where children ages 8–14 do in place what the Seeders Chronicles document in story.

Voice

Warm, deliberate, editorial. Family-forward to guests; institutional-grade to investors. Play treated as serious developmental work.

The Arc

A forty-year
arc.

The Hacienda Barú story did not begin in 1976 and does not end in 2026. It is a deep-time arc: indigenous lands, settler regret, slow restoration, and the next generation's stewardship.

Every Nido Farms communication carries this arc. Never reduce the project to "a new ecolodge." Always anchor it in the forty-year regeneration story.

Founding decree

Decreto Ejecutivo Nº 24639-MIRENEM
La Gaceta Nº 190 · 6 October 1995

Pre-1500
Brunca (Boruca) territory

The Costa Ballena coast lay within the ancestral lands of the Brunca (Boruca) peoples — one of the indigenous nations of Costa Rica's South Pacific.

1972
Cattle ranch baseline

Earliest documented aerial photograph: pastures and rice paddies stretch where forest now stands.

1976
Jack & Diane Ewing arrive

Jack Ewing — a biologist by training — and Diane arrived from the United States. First regenerative decision: hunting banned on the property.

1987
First ecotourism guests

Birders, biologists, eco-travelers arrive at a recovering ecosystem.

1990
Cattle sold · ASANA founded

~150 ha released to natural regeneration. Path of the Tapir Biological Corridor begins.

1995
Refuge declared

Decreto Ejecutivo Nº 24639-MIRENEM. 330 ha. Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre — Categoría Mixta. Signed by President Figueres Olsen.

2014
Plan General de Manejo

Resolution R-SINAC-CONAC-021-2014 — operative governance framework adopted.

2020s
Mature secondary forest

365 bird species recorded. All four Costa Rican TINTIN species in residence. Sloths, scarlet macaws, ocelot, margay, tapir. Jack Ewing publishes TINTINs Are Made of Chocolate (2008) — three decades of the land in one book.

Ecosystem Position

Where Nido sits inside the Regen ecosystem.

Nido Farms is a Lane A asset inside the Planetary Regenerative Trust (PRT). It is a real-estate-anchored, cash-flowing ecotourism business that pairs with biodiversity credits (Lane B) and operating-company services (Lane C).

The brand must speak two registers at once: family-warm to guests, institutional to investors. The Place Fund co-branded lockup (spread 20) handles the latter.

Nido operates at the Explorer life-stage of the Zoen ecosystem — where the virtues the Chronicles teach through story are practiced in land, light, and relationship. The physical manifestation of the Seeders movement.

Family-positioned wedge

Every directly comparable boutique ecolodge in the Dominical–Uvita corridor is adults-only or age-gates at 6+. Nido anchors a new category at expected published ADR of $550–$1,200+.

Copywriting Patterns

How a Nido sentence is built.

Five patterns recur across the site, the deck, and the partner letter. Use them. They're the verbal equivalent of the rose underline.

01 · The bare statement

"Children at the centre. Parents restored. Nature as teacher."

Three nouns. Three verbs. No conjunctions. Use for the headline rotation, the IG opener, the deck cover. Always pair with the place: "330 hectares · ridge-to-reef."

02 · The historical anchor

"On 6 October 1995, the refuge was declared. Forty years of stewardship continue into the next generation."

Always cite the date. Always link the past to the future. Investors and journalists both need this.

03 · The numbered fact

"330 hectares. 365 bird species. 3 km of beachfront. One forty-year refuge."

Stack concrete numbers. Never fuzz them ("plenty of wildlife"). End with the one human-scale closer.

04 · The Pura Vida close

"Pura vida. Not the tourist phrase — the original instruction."

Reserved for final footer, partner letter close, and the last slide of any deck. Used once per surface, never twice.

Story of Place

Always ground in the Story of Place (Bill Reed). The land's arc precedes the project's arc. Never introduce Nido without the 50-year trajectory it sits inside.

Wordmark

The mark, typed.

Until a custom symbol is commissioned, the Nido identity lives as a typographic wordmark — set in Cormorant Garamond, lowercase, with a single italic rose n as the brand signal.

The rose underline.

Every section in every Nido communication opens with a single micro-label: 11px Inter Semi-Bold, tracked 0.22em uppercase, in Nido rose, with a 1px rose underline.

This one detail is the most identifiable element of the system. It must be present on the website, in slide decks, in print, and in social tiles.

05 · Imagery
Imagery Direction

Three families. One way of looking.

All Nido photography is warm, low-contrast, documentary. Natural light. Earth-toned. Children visible but never posed. Adults supporting, not centered.

01 · Place

Land, water, sky, canopy, wildlife.

Aerials at golden hour. Macro of indigenous species. Trail-level perspectives — eye-height of a walking adult.

02 · People

Children leading. Stewards present.

Backs of heads. Hands in dirt. Adults always at the edge of frame. No tropical-cocktail-by-the-pool cliché.

03 · Programs

Activity in the natural materials.

Wood, rope, water, mud. Texture matters more than action. The hand reaching is more useful than the face smiling.

nidoImagery · Direction
14 / 23
05 · Imagery
Imagery Don'ts

What Nido isn't.

Balance, not beauty. The visual lexicon to avoid — each one positions Nido as a beautiful place rather than a place in balance.

The Chronicles put it plainly: this is not about saving beautiful places. It is about reading and restoring balance.

Treatments to avoid

Heavy duotone · saturated tropical look · vignette · HDR sky · golden-hour Instagram filter

Subjects to avoid

Posed family-by-the-pool · spa hands holding stones · couples in flowing linen · drone-over-yacht · "mindful" coffee on the deck

Compositions to avoid

Symmetric centered hero · text-overlay-on-mountain · faces filling the frame · staff posed in uniform

Material Palette

Wood, stone, clay, linen.

The architectural register that the lodge build, signage, packaging, and on-property graphics should sit inside. Honest materials, locally sourced where possible.

Cocobolo · dark

Hardwood. Interior, ceiling structure, decking accents.

Teak · weathered

Furniture, joinery, doors. Ages to silver-grey outdoors.

River stone

Foundation work, paths, bathing pools.
